Matthew 5:27-28

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The first set of texts, from Matthew 5 (with parallels in Mark), strengthen the intentionality of marriage by reminding that adultery — the loss of marriage — is more than a physical act, but also involves matters of the heart.

Mark 10:45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

What Matthew and Mark both stress is the Son of Man as ransom for many, a phrase deserving a brief explanation. The term “ransom” translates the Greek word lutron which means “the price of release.”

 

2 Samuel 7:12-14a

When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son.

By the time Jesus inaugurated his public ministry in the late 20's C.E., Israel seethed with revolution, with each of several groups advocating for this or that means of bringing justice back to God's chosen people. In each instance, the effective use of power played a key role, and they all wanted to be number one.
