Joshua 1:7

Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

Paul Tillich, one of the finest theological minds of the 20th century, identified anxiety as the primary human malady due to the loss of meaning in life. He recommends courage as the solution.

 

He defines courage as affirming life in the face of the fact that life will ultimately end, that it may seem to have no purpose, and that people are destined to carry great burdens of guilt for not being perfect or “acceptable” in their own eyes. [BN,1]
