Placing this material about the new
city as the climax of Revelation also makes it the counter-point to
the image of Babylon, the old city that is collapsing.
While we generally refer to the new
city as a future development, parallel to our idea of heaven, John’s depiction
of it is the idealized form of God’s people, “the bride” city. Unlike the
unfaithful Babylon, the new Jerusalem is the city as it should be and as it
will be some day. [BN,13]
