From Background Notes [BN] for Feb 14th &
15th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
So it is with the people of God in our
time. We stand on Jordan’s stormy banks as well, but we face westward toward
the land of promise. We stand with Peter and James and John in the high place
with the one who sits at God’s right hand.
We stand where Moses and Elijah once
stood — and, yes, where Elisha once stood. The task of the church for our time
is not small, and we are clearly not adequate for it. But then we see Jesus, transfigured
before us, set free from death’s grip, living in the glory. And we cry out with
Elisha, “My father! My Father! The chariots of horsemen of Israel!” For at the
very least, we need those. But we don’t cry out because they are leaving us. We
don’t cry out because we have been abandoned. No, we cry out “Our Father, who
art in heaven, holy is your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.” And more than any of these others, we hopefully believe
that an unlimited portion of God’s Spirit comes on us, and we see God’s glory
come down here. [BN,4]
