While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

Suddenly, a cloud appears around this glory moment, and the disciples saw the form of a very old object in Jewish history: the glory pillar of cloud and fire seen in the days of Moses.

Clouds and fire and light are all symbols of God’s presence in the Bible. Daniel witnessed “the Son of Man with clouds” in Daniel 7:9-14 coming with clouds into the presence of God who sat on a throne of fire beside a river of fire. Those images announce the arrival of God who is about to speak His word: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”[BN,1]
