Joshua 3:8

Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’

From Background Notes [BN] for Sept 17th & 18th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Courage encounters boundaries and makes decisions about breaching them. Once crossed, they are points of no return.

Choosing to move beyond the boundary implicates the person of courage in a new destiny, a new world, accompanied by new risks and possibilities. For Israel the boundary breached in Joshua’s story is the river, followed by the land of Canaan. These two lie beyond the wilderness and the unfulfilled promises seen only at a distance. Many did not enter the land, their bodies left behind in the sands of the desert, fleshly monuments to disobedience, fear, cowardice, and fatal consequences. [BN,1]
