Acts 1:21-22

Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

From Background Notes [BN] for Mar 26th & 27th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

The resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth is nothing short of a revolution, and revolutions carry with them strong political implications. Through them the governance of human beings undergoes dramatic transformation.

We can say, then, with John Howard Yoder, that there is a “Politics of Jesus” which does not look anything like the party politics of any world government in any nation; whether a repressive regime without due process of law or a liberal western democracy which refuses to commit itself to anything worth dying for. We live in a world of such politics, and so did Jesus. But when he rose from the dead, the capacity of the Roman Empire to rule by the intimidation of its citizens through capital execution experienced a death blow, since resurrection meant that Rome could not any longer have the last word. When we utter the words “Jesus is Risen!” unjust kings ought to tremble in their shoes. If a crucified Jesus rises from the dead, all human bets are off, all chains are broken, and the hymn of his followers becomes the song of the soul set free — free at last! [BN,1]
