Isaiah 9:1

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

Then the prophet offers a vision of a new future — a real future — that opens to God’s people, even though it has not yet arrived.



He tells them in so many words, “This is what your future can look like,” and then lists the wonderful changes in store for Israel, with enlarged borders, increased joy, people of the harvest, soldiers victorious, oppressed ones set free, and war at an end! The words sound too good to be true, and with the pressure of new enemies encircling the southern kingdom of Israel, ready to invade, the prophet’s words might well have fallen on deaf ears. [BN,4]
