Genesis 15:13

Then the LORD said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.

From Background Notes [BN] for Sept 13th & 14th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Even if we go to Egypt, still God’s word proves true! And so we shall surely come up out of Egypt “with great possessions.”

There is more at work in the plot of Joseph’s story than the random events of a troubled family. We do not yet hear clearly the word of the Lord to which we may cry, “Thanks be to God” or “We thank you, O Lord Christ!” But we do sense a growing sense that more is happening, and it stands for us to wait until the next episode unfolds in chapter 39 — one that suddenly names the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and assures us that the same God is “with” Joseph. Until then, we are left to wonder about that God and where He is in all of this, just as we sometimes wonder where God is in our lives when we find ourselves in the cistern without water, those we trusted standing above abusing us, and the sound of Ishmaelite traders beating their way to our door.  [BN,7]
