Matthew 1:21

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

From Background Notes [BN] for December 14th & 15th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

Joseph is not left wondering about the name, but hears its meaning: “For he will save his people from their sins.” The name Jesus is the Greek transliteration (“letter-for letter”) of the Hebrew word Yēšûa‘ or Yēšû‘.

Another form is found in the Old Testament: Joshua, Moses’ successor, whose name originally meant “Yahweh helps,” but by popular usage came to mean “Yahweh saves.” The angel’s words are consistent with the language of Zechariah’s prayer which we studied last week. [BN,7]
