Matthew 12:39-40

He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Is it any wonder that Jesus drew the parallel between Jonah and himself?

The earth held the body of the crucified Jesus for three days also, in anticipation of resurrection and the future empowerment of his followers for the mission they were about to undertake in his name. Jesus submitted to death so that the future might open up. [BN,5]
