From Background Notes [BN] for June 18th & 19th written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
Faced by the challenges to their faith
in the first century, some followers of Jesus incrementally slipped away from
their first commitments to the Gospel.
Having accepted the truth that Jesus
was the promised Messiah and the basis for full salvation from their sins, they
had second thoughts, wondering if the new direction of their lives was worth
dying for. Was Jesus worth the cost? The writer to the Hebrews undertakes a
persuasive sermon in the letter which bears their name. What kind of Hebrews
will they be? As Jewish Christians they gave up the protection of the Empire
accorded to Jews as a legal religion. Because they acknowledged that Jesus is
Lord, Caesar would need to take a
backseat, along with the criminal risks that entailed. From their fellow Jews
they experienced all forms of ostracism, including being considered dead to
their family of origin as well as removal from the synagogue community. The
writer wants to shore up their faith and offer convincing proof that the life given
them by Jesus, and witnessed by their baptism, was the best way to live and the
only way to die. [BN,12]
