From Background Notes [BN] for Apr 2nd & 3rd written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
Spiritual death leads to loss of human
purpose and the “abundant life” of which Jesus speaks. A crisis of meaning
continues in our world, with the consequential frantic search for political
leadership to restore purpose.
The French sociologist, Emile Durkeim,
identified this condition with the term anomie (“without law”).
According to Durkheim, this produces, in humanity, those psychological states marked
by futility, lack of purpose, and emotional emptiness and despair.
Striving is considered useless, because there is no accepted definition of what
is purposeful. The purposeless life, he noted, often leads to suicide,
the ultimate denial of life and the dark affirmation of death. [BN,1]
