From Background Notes [BN] for Oct 31st & Nov 1st written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
From the looks of it, the man was no
doubt saying to Jesus, “Look, I’ve had a really fantastic life, supported by an
abundance of possessions. I like my life as it is now. Is there any chance I
can extend that opulence forever?”
Normally, a person inherits things
when a parent or loved one dies and wills it to them. The rich man isn’t satisfied
with inheriting possessions now, but wants to inherit the capacity to retain
his possession forever! So far he has hoarded things, now he wants to
hoard the time to enjoy those things. The rich man’s understanding of
the future life as eternal life is patently materialistic. [BN,4]
