From Background Notes [BN] for Oct 10th & 11th written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
No national group understood the joy
of release and freedom better than ancient Israel whose story included
the Exodus from Egyptian bondage.
No people savored more the return from
exile than Judah after the Babylonian conquest of Canaan in 587 BCE. In the
1960’s we heard Martin proclaim, “Free at last, free at last, thank God, Almighty, free at last!” In the old
Wesley hymn, the poet portrayed salvation through an imprisonment metaphor and
the word, “My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth, and
followed Thee.” [BN,1]
