From Background Notes [BN] for Sept 26th & 27th written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
But Jesus "knew what was in
man". Nicodemus was no exception. He brought his own human condition to Jesus
and reveals a bit of it when he says...
..."Can a man be born when he is
old?"--a statement leading scholars to think that he was, in fact, old.
His life patterns were well formed and his attitudes towards the world around him
deeply set. His times were not happy ones. He may have become cynical. Too much
water under the bridge, he might have thought. But Jesus "knew what was in
man". Cutting to the heart of things, he begins with "I tell you the
truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." [BN,2]
