From Background Notes [BN] for Dec 13th &
14th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
“Matthew” no doubt had access to
Jewish records, probably through contacts within the Temple or synagogue communities.
Archaeology has shown time and time again that nations with firm identities
kept records.
Israel was a highly literate society,
thanks in no small measure to the synagogue communities found all across the Roman
Empire, as well as in Palestine. Since the days of Ezra the Scribe (see the
biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah), Israel had been “the people
of the Book,” and their Bible (our Old Testament) had grown as a canon through
the judicious compilation and editing of sources. It is common to find direct
citations from materials no longer available but which preserved facets of
Israel’s history, ideas, practices, poetry, and prophetic activity. [BN,4]
