From Background Notes [BN] for Dec 6th &
7th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
Then the prophet offers a vision of a
new future — a real future — that opens to God’s people, even though it has not
yet arrived.
He tells them in so many words, “This
is what your future can look like,” and then lists the wonderful changes in
store for Israel, with enlarged borders, increased joy, people of the harvest,
soldiers victorious, oppressed ones set free, and war at an end! The words
sound too good to be true, and with the pressure of new enemies encircling the
southern kingdom of Israel, ready to invade, the prophet’s words might well
have fallen on deaf ears. [BN,4]
