Mark 1:16-17

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

From Background Notes [BN] for Nov 1st & 2nd written by Pastor Bob Brown:

The purpose driven life does not proceed with fits and starts.

Mark writes, “When he had gone a little farther, he saw …” (1:19). Here is steady, thoughtful progression that patiently works the landscape of Galilee, paying attention to the people at their work, observing them and deciding who is next. Just as before, Jesus thinks in pairs, as he watches James and John, also brothers, this time “preparing their nets” (1:19). Is he not identifying necessary qualities in them, established by long habit and constant practice? One pair of brothers cast nets, while another prepares them. Will not Jesus need both kinds of people to do kingdom work? Does not the Church consist of a body of individuals with different gifts, all necessary in its corporate life and mission? There is clear purpose in the manner of Jesus call. [BN,4]
