Philippians 3:7

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

From Background Notes [BN] for November 16th& 17th  written by Pastor Bob Brown:

As growing Christians, there are good things and then there are better things. What happens, if we remain stuck in the past, is that the good things can start to go bad, especially when we cling to them as trophies of our past accomplishments.

Good things, no matter how good, turn into possessions — things that we own — and we accumulate them, even monopolize them, and then imagine we have finally arrived. But we cannot live like that for long, as Paul himself discovered, and so he made a conscious choice to let go and consider loss everything that had become for Paul “profit.” That word in the Greek (kerdē: gain, advantage, a “win”) comes right out of the accounting world where accumulating the favorable difference between earnings and expenses, assets and liabilities, leads to success.  [BN,5]
