Genesis 8:22

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.

From Background Notes [BN] for November 23rd & 24th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

When our pilgrim ancestors settled on the North American continent, they soon experienced the challenges of first seedtime and first harvest in a land that held great promise for a generous food supply.

Our idealized portrait of English settlers sitting alongside Native Americans with overflowing tables of indigenous fruit and vegetables makes a fine story. And yet, truth be told, the earliest framework for an English Thanksgiving on American soil was a bit more tenuous. The celebrants faced overwhelming odds for survival, and thanksgiving took the form of prayer, more commonly than feasting. [BN,1]
