John 13:14-15

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

From Background Notes [BN] for August 3rd & 4th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

In John 13 the Gospel reminds us that Jesus is, in fact, doing something in our lives which preempts our dearest occupations.

When John tells the story in chapter 13, familiar material is missing of an otherwise familiar occasion. To fulfill unique purposes, the writer moves the Eucharist — the Lord’s Supper — sayings back into John 6 where we hear Jesus talking about “eating my flesh and drinking my blood.” In effect he places service before Eucharist. He launches a silent revolution. “What I have done for you?” is a dislocating question since the disciples didn’t ask Jesus to do what he did! In fact, they resisted having him do what he did for them. Is not this ultimate discipleship, to surrender what we want Jesus to do for us in order to allow him to have his way with us?  [BN,11]
