From Background Notes [BN] for Jan 23rd & 24th written by
Pastor Bob Brown:
The book of Proverbs is a
collection of wise sayings, tied together by the common thread of God’s
superior wisdom.
The word for “proverb” in Hebrew is māshāl,
which in turn is based on the verb māshal, “to represent, be like.” The
noun has a range of meaning: “proverb, parable, allegory, byword, taunt,
discourse” and occurs nearly 40 times in the Old Testament. What is the purpose
of the māshāl? It functions as a tool to pry loose the meaning of life’s
puzzles, and often has recourse to extended comparisons between the familiar
and the unfamiliar. Our concept of analogy certainly applies, yet with a
deeper meaning. How do we make sense out of our human situation within the
universe? More directly, how do we make sense out of our own predicaments,
particularly in a world that is complex and at times absurd? [BN,7]
