Our text this week stands in stark contrast to miracles of 1 Kings 17 and the shock and awe of 1 Kings 18.

No crowds gather to be impressed by the prophetic signs of Elijah. No final act of victory crushes the prophets of Baal, sending the royal kingdom into disarray. Instead the triumphant prophet runs for his life in what looks like a desperate act of survival. The fire may have fallen on the altar at Mount Carmel, but not an ember landed on Queen Jezebel who is more determined than ever to end the advocacy of Yahweh, once and for all. We can hear her mutter in our imaginations, “Elijah is a dead man.” [BN,1]
