From Background Notes [BN] for July 20th & 21st
written by Pastor Bob Brown:
In the Romans 5:10 cited above, the death of God’s Son, Jesus, made possible our reconciliation to God. Sin made us God’s enemies — from our side, not His. We proved ourselves hostile and alienated from God, not because He moved, but because we did. All along, a greater power for friendship was in play.

God did not love us when we were His friends, but when we were His enemies — from our side. Sin is hostility toward God which declares us to be His enemies. On His initiative — not ours — God took the reconciling step of offering His Son in proof of His love. [BN, 8]
