Luke 24:4

While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.

From Background Notes [BN] for April 7th & 8th written by Pastor Bob Brown:

The word “wondering” comes from the Greek root aporeĊ, meaning “be at a loss, be uncertain, or be disturbed.” They were “without resource” to explain what they saw or to do what they came to do.

What at first was a good thing, “the stone rolled away,” quickly became a troubling thing, “they did not find the body.” What we must understand here is that the empty tomb was not taken as a positive development by the women, but that which left them “at a loss.” Far from being an obvious proof of anything else, it was an obstacle to the grieving women. If the empty tomb was to take on positive significance, more information would be needed. In other words, Luke doesn’t invent a story that leads off with the thrilling discovery that the tomb was empty, but rather unfolds the details in such a way that the empty tomb poses a problem.  [BN, 3]
