From Background Notes [BN] for March 17th/18th written by Pastor Bob Brown:
The role of the woman is crucial, to be sure. She set in motion a chain of testimony that ultimately led to a face-to-face encounter with Jesus.
The role of the woman is crucial, to be sure. She set in motion a chain of testimony that ultimately led to a face-to-face encounter with Jesus.
Yet, the contribution of a true witness is not to carry the full weight of the facts, but to point the audience to the facts themselves, effectively stepping out of the way, transparent to the truth that stands on its own merit. “We no longer believe just because of what you said,” the Samaritans tell the woman. “We have heard for ourselves.” It is this first-hand experience with Jesus that leads to the climactic statement: “We know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”[BN,10]
